Our Favourite Camps - Out of the Ordinary

Okavango Delta - Abu Camp

6 meerkat rating

See the Okavango Delta through different eyes as you walk with elephants through the bush. Abu Camp breaks down the barriers between people and elephants with first-hand insight into the social politics of breeding herds. For a truly unforgettable experience, spend a night sleeping out with the elephants in your own 'star bed'.

Chobe - Chobe Princess Houseboats

4 meerkat rating

Experience Chobe from a different perspective on board a houseboat. Let the Chobe Princesses take you away from the busyness of the Chobe Riverfront near Kasane. Watch the wildlife along the water’s edge, fish for your supper and fall asleep moored on secluded stretches of the Chobe River at night.

Moremi, Khwai & Private Reserves - Sky Beds at Hyena Pan

3 meerkat rating

WOW! Towering three-metre platforms overlook a waterhole with open and uninterrupted views of the Milky Way above and untamed wildlife below. Cosy, safe and yet completely immersed in nature, the Sky Beds in the Khwai Private Reserve are a unique experience, best combined with some nights at Hyena Pan Tented Camp or the more upscale sister camp Sable Alley.

Savuti, Linyanti & Selinda - Selinda Explorers

4 meerkat rating

Prepare to book way in advance, Selinda Explorers is extremely popular – offering a stylish ‘Out of Africa’ tented camp focusing on guided walks, game drives and even canoeing if the spillway is flowing. Despite being one of the more affordable camps in the Linyanti/Selinda private concessions, Selinda Explorers is worth so much more than being “Selinda’s affordable little sister”, with guiding, food and service nearly unparalleled in Botswana.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, National Park & Nxai Pan - Camp Kalahari

3 meerkat rating

Endless white nothingness, unimaginable silence and magnificent clear skies open your imagination and set your soul free. Meet the meerkats with character, set off on quad bikes across miles of salt, go tracking with the San people and enjoy the clearest view of the Milky Way – ever!

Central Kalahari - Letaka Safaris Blooming Desert

4 meerkat rating

This small group safari led by Letaka Safaris’ highly-qualified guides explores the Central Kalahari when it comes alive during the Green Season. Departures are only once a year and offer so much more than a standard lodge with access to remote areas and a complete immersion in the vast magnificence of the desert.

Victoria Falls - Sindabezi Island Lodge

5 meerkat rating

Situated on an island on the Zambezi River, Sindabezi’s five open-sided chalets each offer a unique river view from your bed (and the loo). The open design allows you to fall asleep to the sound of the river and the distant rumble of Victoria Falls. Sindabezi is close enough to have convenient access to a wide range of activities in the Victoria Falls area, yet far enough to feel you have truly escaped the modern world.

Hwange - Camp Hwange

4 meerkat rating

An infectious enthusiasm for the bush flows through this camp, from the owners and management through to the guides and trackers. If you list walking as a preferred activity, get those boots ready because the guides at Camp Hwange take their walking safaris seriously! For a step a little further on wild side you can combine a stay here with the sister camp, Hwange Bush Camp.

Mana Pools - Natureways Canoe Trail

3 meerkat rating

Imagine yourself paddling peacefully along the Zambezi River flanked by the mountains of the Zambezi rift escarpment on the Zambian side and Mana Pools National Park on the Zimbabwean side… sounds like utter tranquillity and food for the soul! Indeed it is but in more ways than you think! Each day challenges you, not only with the physical effort of paddling but also the constant awareness of wildlife all around you. Your reward is a great sense of achievement and an ice-cold sundowner every evening!

South Luangwa - Chikoko Walking Trails

5 meerkat rating

South Luangwa National Park is the birthplace of walking safaris, where you ditch the game-drive vehicle and stride out on your own steam in one of Zambia’s best birding and wildlife locations. After a day’s walking, enjoy the rustic simplicity of Crocodile River Camp or Chikoko Tree Camp, both of which are only accessible on foot.

Lower Zambezi - Chongwe River House

5 meerkat rating

The architect Neil Rocher had a whole lot of fun creating Chongwe River House (and perhaps a whole lot of something else) and the design displays exquisite detail, respect for nature and abundant creativity. Overlooking the Chongwe River to the Zambezi escarpment, this exclusive use house can cater for up to eight guests in four en-suite bedrooms, with private hosts, chef and game viewing into the Lower Zambezi National Park.

Kruger Private Reserves - Ulusaba Cliff Lodge

5 meerkat rating

The sensational setting of this camp is echoed by its amenities, which include a gym and a spa treatment room (for working off those safari high teas and working out the kinks from game drives!). Ulusaba Cliff has only two suites that can be taken on an exclusive-use basis – perfect if you’re a large family travelling together.
