Is the best time to travel to Botswana between June to October?
Yes, travelling between June and October is often considered the premier time for game viewing. This is the “high season,” which also means it’s typically the most expensive time to visit.
With Sparse vegetation, minimal to no rainfall, and wildlife congregating at permanent water sources can contribute to remarkable sightings.
Keep in mind: mornings and evenings can be notably chilly during the winter months (mid-June to mid-August generally), so layered clothing is essential. By late August or early September in Botswana, summer begins to return, and temperatures start to climb. October is generally the hottest month of the year in Botswana — with daily highs often reaching or exceeding 35°C.

Our summer months bring high temperatures in November, cooling slightly as the rains begin. While we can’t predict exactly when it will rain, there’s generally a chance of showers starting in November (sometimes even late October). Traditionally in Botswana, should we get rain over our Independence weekend in late September, it’s considered a sign of good luck for the season ahead!
Rainfall during this period usually comes in the form of dramatic afternoon thunderstorms rather than all-day downpours. Daytime temperatures generally range from the high 20s°C to mid-30s°C.
We often refer to late December through March in Botswana safari terms as the “Green Season” — and it truly is! Think lush, green, and vibrant landscapes everywhere you look.
What is Botswana’s shoulder season?
April ,May ,November and early December are referred to as the Botswana safari ‘Shoulder season.’
The transitional period either side of the High Season period, either before or after the Rainy season.
- April & May follow the rainy season (late December to March) and lead into the dry high season.
- November & December bridge the gap between the dry high season and the start of the Green Season

Should I travel to Botswana between April and May?
Absolutely! This is a lovely transitional period where you’ll see a mix of the lush green season and the oncoming dry winter months.
The vegetation is still fairly green, but the higher grasses begin to drop. Water levels begin to rise in the Okavango Delta, and destinations like the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans are alive with migrating zebra and wildebeest.
Expect pleasantly mild to cool mornings and comfortable daytime temperatures.
