WHY GREEN SEASON CAN BE BEST

Posted by:

The arrival of the green season is, of course, a season of preference for the flora and fauna which explodes in all its variety and its beauty. It’s a unique season to discover Botswana in all her 50 shades of green, the arid sections and valleys lined with green meadows and flowers. Botswana becomes a paradise for birdwatchers with the arrival of the very unique and colourful flamingos in the Kalahari part of the country.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SUPER REDUCED RATES

Botswana’s green season is a great time of year for travellers to take advantage of reduced rates at camps which would normally be out of reach during high season. It is traditionally common to think that travelling in green season is not the best time of the year. However as your safari expert we’re here to assure you that travel in green season can be best. There are exceptionally reduced rates, great photography and wonderful birding.

THE BEST TIME FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Most of the country’s annual rainfall comes at this time of year between January and February with some afternoon thunderstorms that leave the landscape lush and green all the way to April. The 50 shades of green along with a dramatic backdrop of dark clouds, lightening followed by colourful rainbows are every photographer’s dream come true as this is the perfect setup for fantastic photographs of wildlife.

LOADS OF BABIES

During this time a variety of plains game take advantage of the lush, abundant grass for grazing and also give birth all at once. This is a bitter sweet moment. As you enjoy seeing the babies prance around, the predators see easy targets and quick meals. This is where the dramatic sightings and photographic opportunities come in.

BEST TIMING FOR BIRDERS

When the rains arrive so do the summer migrant birds that might have flown in from some other parts of Africa, Europe and Asia. For keen birders or ‘twitchers’ as they are fondly known chances of witnessing migratory birds in breeding plumage and building their nests this is definitely the time for them to be in our part of the world. See a range of bird species like wattled crane, a variety of rollers, kingfishers the super colourful bee-eaters and many more!

THE SEASON OF ONE OF AFRICA’S LARGEST MIGRATIONS

Every year, during the green season Botswana’s zebra migration takes place between the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Pans. This migration is the second largest zebra migration in the world. Scattered herds can be seen throughout Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi palm belt, near the slat pans where the mineral content of grass is said to be the highest.
